Biographical Information

Born 26-2-1943 Solihull, near Birmingham (now in West Midlands)
Evacuated to Cornwall for first two years of my life (until World War Two was over) returning to live in Sheldon, a district of Birmingham until I was 18 when I moved with my Parents and Sister to live in Knowle, a small village a few miles south of Solihull.
1961 - 1975
After leaving Central Grammar School (with 5 'O' Levels and 'A' Level Maths) started at Cinncinatti Milacron Ltd (Machine Tool Manufacturer) as a Student Apprentice and began a four year Higher National Diploma Course in both Mechanical and Production Engineering. After Graduation became a Machine Tool Designer until accepting Voluntary Redundancy in October 1975 in order to achieve a personal ambition of undertaking a 'Round the World Tour'.
1975 - 1976
Departed from London (Gatwick) late November on first leg of world tour. Arrived Perth (Western Australia) a week later after a stopover in Singapore. Travelled by Greyhound Bus to Adelaide (South Australia) then after a few days rest on to Melbourne (Victoria). After day trips to Ballarat and Bendigo (old gold mining towns) moved on again to Sydney (New South Wales) passing through Canberra (Capital Territory) on the way. After a weeks recouperation flew to Auckland (New Zealand) to stay with my Aunt & Uncle who had emigrated from the UK some 20 years ago. After Christmas flew back to Sydney then travelled by train up to Brisbane from where I visited Surfers Paradise and the Sunshine Coast. Returned to Sydney via Newcastle for a week then flew to Hawaii (via Fiji) for a brief stopover before arriving in Los Angeles (California USA). Spent the next 21 days travelling by train across America visiting San Francisco, Chicargo, New orleans, Denver, Washington, Boston and New York (15,000 miles in all). Broke and very weary flew from New York (Kennady) arriving at London (Heathrow) in Mid February (84 days in total).
1976 - 1983
Soon after returning home I met Catherine, my wife to be, so decided I needed to get a job. Began working as a contract designer located at Kings Norton, Birmingham (Triplex Safety Glass) and purchased a new house in Redditch, Worcestershire. Got married in October 1976 and moved into new house. The birth of our first son, Richard in October 1979 co-incided with redundancy. Started new job (design draughtsman) at Fife Controls based in Redditch in January 1980. Second son, James was born in February 1982. A year later I was made redundant again due to Company being relocated to Germany. Had to move south to High Wycombe, Bucks to find work due to deep recession in Midlands, starting work at Rye Mahinery as a machine designer in May 1983.
1983 - 1990
Finally sold house in Redditch and moved Family to new house in Downley, High Wycombe in November 1983. Promoted to Chief Draughtsman in December (quite a year!). Life finally settled into more of a routine with very little of an exciting nature happening until the spring of 1990 when we moved to a larger house at Bicester in Oxfordshire.

1990 - 2000

Despite moving 30 miles to the north I continued working in High Wycombe but travelling got a lot easier in 1991 when the M40 Motorway was finally opened throughout from London to the Midlands. Life settled down again until 1993 when in a moment of madness we purchased a Timeshare Apartment (located in Costa del Sol, Spain) but as we have also joined an Exchange Scheme we can enjoy luxurious holidays for evermore (provided we keep paying the Maintenance Fees!). In 1997 we decided to have a conservatory built so we can now sit and admire the garden any time of the year whatever the weather. In 1999 Richard started his BSc (Hons.) Engineering Course at the University of the West of England (U.W.E.) in Bristol whilst James started a BA Graphic Design Course at Coventry University in 2000. This has cost us a small fortune as we have had to pay their fees (thanks to the Government).

2000 - Date

The year 2001 was nothing like the film (apart from being a disaster story). In February the UK began to suffer from its worst outbreak of Foot & Mouth Disease which lasted for over six months and devestated both the farming and tourist industries. Regrettably my mother became ill and died in April, following this I was made redundant again in June when Rye was taken over by an Italian Company whose first action was to get rid of most of the workforce. Fortunately, after just a few weeks of unemployment I was able to find another design job with Winchester Engineering, a small family run company based in Aylesbury, just 15 miles down the A41. Of course the shocking events of September 11th will always remain as a grim reminder of the horrors of this world caused by mankind. One happier event occured in October when my wife & I celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary with a nine day visit to the far east including a trip on the famous 'Eastern Orient Express' from Bangkok (Thailand) to Singapore - quite an experience!

After a fairly quiet year in 2002, this year has been quite hectic. Sadly the year began with the rapid deteriation of my step-dad who had been battling with prostate cancer for some time and he died peacefully in his sleep in April. Both sons have now finished University, Richard putting his engineering skills to good use building canal boats whilst James is still looking for a permanent job despite gaining a BA (hons) Degree in Graphic Design. However, he and his fiancee did produce our first grandson in April so we are now becoming quite skilled at grandparenting. Both my wife & I are enjoying our reduced working week (down to four days) and the extra long weekends even more so.

Personal Interests

Railways
From a very early age I have been interested in railways, with a particular passion for the steam locomotive. I was fortunate in being able to visit many Motive Power Depots and Railway Workshops in the years leading up to the final demise of steam on British Railways in the late 1960's. Following this I have travelled many miles by train in the whole of Great Britain and Ireland including many lines which have since closed and been dismantled. I have also taken a keen interest in the Railway Preservation Scene and was an active Member of the Severn Valley Railway for over 30 years. During this time I have been involved in the preservation of two small Industrial Steam Locomotives as Secretary of W.I.L.P.G. (Warickshire Industrial Locomotive Preservation Group) and more recently as a Trustee of W.I.L.T. (Warwickshire Industrial Locomotive Trust) which is a fund raising Charity to help maintain an interest in steam locomotives for future generations. More recently I have given my support to the Welsh Highland Railway and the Lynton & Barnstaple Railway both of which closed down in the mid-1930's and are now being revived again. In 1995 I discovered the magic of Garden Railways and I now build my own narrow gauge steam locomotives (1:19 scale) which I can run in my own garden and at Model Railway Exhibitions. As well as railways I also have a passing interest in Tramways, Canals and Industrial Archaeology.

F1 Motor Racing
Since the early 1970's I have been a keen supporter of Formula One and have followed the Career of fellow Brummie Nigel Mansell from 1980 until his retirement from motor racing in 1995. I now also follow the fortunes of any other British Driver hoping to see one become World Champion again before not to long. I might have to wait until Michael Schumaker retires though!

Photography
I began taking black & white photo's in the late 1950's before accquiring a 35mm camera in 1964 when I changed from taking black & white prints to colour slides (using mainly Agfa film). I now have a collection of over 2,000 slides mainly of railway related subjects. In 1976 I changed to colour prints taking much more varied photographs. In 2,000 I have started to use a Digital Camera (Kodak DC215) and some of the pictures I have taken appear on this Web Site.

Science Fiction
Again from an early age I have been fascinated by Science Fiction Stories from 'The Day of the Triffids' to '2001'. I mainly prefer stories set in the near future to fantasy science fiction set a long time in the future. I also enjoy watching Sci-Fi Movies such as 'Alien' but I was not very impressed with the 'Star Wars' Series of Movies as I feel they were aimed at a much younger audience.
